Hand Pressed Nerikomi Dish
Hand Pressed Nerikomi Dish
Nerikomi is a traditional Japanese technique of layering or wedging colored clays together.
Nerikomi dishes are made from a mix of stoneware and porcelain clay reclaim. Stoneware clay is colored with dark teal mason stains and wedged into white porcelain. Once the clays are blended, a small ball of clay is rolled flat and hand pressed onto a small, plaster mold. After the initial bisque firing, Nerikomi pieces are wet sanded to enhance clay contrasts. Surfaces of each piece are glazed shiny and clear.
Due to the nature of hand-built cups, each piece takes on an organic shape and is not perfectly symmetrical. Each piece of handmade pottery varies slightly in design and size and is considered a unique piece of art.
